15 simple measures to enhance fertility in males

Well balanced diet: A diet consisting of balanced proportions of carbohydrates, fats and proteins is essential for maintaining good health and also male fertility. Eat plenty of fresh fruits, green leafy vegetables, sea foods like oysters, dry fruits etc. They are plentiful in zinc, oils, vitamins and other antioxidants that improve the semen quality in males.
- Drink plenty of water: Water flushes the body of toxins which reduce male fertility. About eight glasses of water must be consumed daily by a healthy adult male.
- Exercise: Regular exercise keeps the body fit and lean. Obesity is linked to infertility in males. Nonetheless avoid strenuous physical activity as it is likely to increase the body temperature damaging the sperms. Similarly avoid cycling for long periods as it increases the scrotal temperature.
- Appropriate supportive clothing: Refrain from wearing tight underclothes for support; rather wear loose clothing so that the temperature of the scrotum is lower than that of the body temperature.
- Try meditation: Meditation helps relax the mind and also the body thereby enhancing fertility in males.
- Use fertility enhancers: Apart from a balanced diet, in subjects who are deficient need external supplementation. Zinc, selenium, CoQ, multivitamins, folic acid supplements can be used to enhance male fertility.
- Try herbal remedies: Males suffering from erectile dysfunction are likely to benefit from the use of natural methods like herbs. Korean ginseng, Yohimbe, Maca is some of the herbs that can be consumed. They dilate the blood vessels of the penis and treat impotence. They also improve the sensitivity of the pelvic nerves. Some of these herbs act as antioxidants and prevent damage to the sperms.
- Try oils: Fish oils, flax seed oil, sunflower oils have been used to increase sperm counts in individuals with decreased counts.
- Try acupuncture: Acupuncture is a form of holistic Chinese medicine that has effective in improving male fertility.
- Stop smoking: Smoking is strongly associated with male infertility. Smoking releases free oxygen radicals and toxic chemicals that harms the quality of sperms and hence quit smoking to enhance fertility
- Avoid sauna and hot tub baths as they increase the scrotal temperature and reduce spermatogenesis. Exposures to extremes of temperature must be avoided as far as possible.
- Avoid stressful situations. Try to be calm and composed and tackle one situation at a time. When stressed take slow and deliberate deep breaths. Prolonged stress has a negative impact on male fertility.
- Avoid anabolic steroids: Anabolic steroids help to build muscles but negatively stimulate testosterone secretion thereby depressing spermatogenesis.
- Avoid laptops and mobile phones: Electronic gadgets like laptops and mobile phones produce strong electromagnetic rays. These rays harm spermatogenesis as they increase the scrotal temperature when these gadgets are placed close to the inguinal region.
- Avoid psychoactive drugs and alcohol: Chronic consumption of alcohol causes liver failure and increases the levels of estrogens in the blood. This decreases testosterone levels in the blood and decreases male fertility. Similarly psychoactive drugs like marijuana damages the sperm DNA leading to genetically defective sperms.
