Male infertility – ways to help
Problems related to fertility have tremendous negative impact on the psychology of both partners. This by itself triggers a vicious cycle that increases the difficulty in conception.
First and foremost it is important to stay calm and avoid being stressed. If there is a suspicion of infertility, try the new, easy to use, home based fertility tests available in the market. These tests can pick up motile sperms in the semen and serve as a useful screening technique for early detection of male infertility. Nonetheless, visit a specialist for further investigations like physical examination, hormonal analysis, semen microscopy etc.
Let’s look at the different ways to help improve male infertility:
- Medical therapy is helpful in cases of hormonal imbalance, immunologic diseases or infections. Abnormality in sexual functions can also be treated with oral medications.
- Surgical methods are very useful in the treatment of varicocoeles (engorgement of the testicular veins) or cyrptorchidism (undescended testis) or tumors.
- Eat a healthy balanced diet: The diet must consist of adequate proportions of fats, proteins and carbohydrates consisting of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meat and sea foods. Avoid eating junk foods containing saturated fats and plenty of carbohydrates. Drink adequate quantities of water to flush off the circulation with toxins released during the various metabolic processes. Keep the consumption of caffeine and related substances to the minimal as they are known to reduce male fertility.
- Take supplements: Zinc is considered to be an important element in inducing spermatogenesis. Other antioxidants like N-acetylcysteine, CoQ, Vitamin C and Vitamin E can be taken as supplements. These antioxidants destroy the free radicals produced during biochemical processes which destroy the sperms leading to infertility. Other substances that can be supplemented like Vitamin B12 and folic acid which play an important role in the synthesis of the sperm DNA and RNA.
- Lifestyle modifications: Regular physical exercise keeps obesity at bay which has been linked to male infertility. Don’t overdo it as it is likely to cause harm. Stop smoking as it has been linked to male infertility. Do not wear tight undergarments as it is likely to increase the temperature of the testis and reduce spermatogenesis. Avoid alcohol and other psychoactive drugs like marihuana which have been proved to affect male fertility adversely.
- Try Herbs: Herbal remedies have been used for thousands of years to improve male sexual function. Herbs are medicinal plants that are to be used in very small quantities. Herbs used for enhancing male fertility improve sperms motility, morphology and semen volume. They also help improve the contractility of the penile muscles and the blood circulation to the penis thereby helping erectile dysfunction. Some herbs that can be used are Korean ginseng, Saw palmetto, Maca, Pycnogenol etc.
- Avoid keeping the laptop on the lap for a long duration while working since the electromagnetic radiations emitted by the laptop increases the scrotal temperature. Similarly keeping cell phones in the front trouser pockets is also known to raise the scrotal temperature. This is detrimental to the process of spermatogenesis.
