Role of herbs in improving male fertility
What are herbs?
Herbs
are medicinal plants, used to strengthen weakened body systems and
boost the body’s own healing powers. For thousands of years, various
ancient civilizations have used herbs for the treatment of diseases. A
number of herbs are used as natural methods for treating the different
problems related to male and female fertility.
Some of the male fertility herbs are as follows:
- Pycnogenol is an extract from the bark of the
Maritime pine. It contains bioflavanoids, procynidins and organic
acids. Together these chemicals act as excellent antioxidants
that help in scavenging the free radicals in the semen. Thus it helps
in improving the quality and function of the sperms.
- Ginseng: Ginseng improves male fertility by fighting
impotence, increasing testosterone levels and sexual desire. It also
increases the sperm mobility and as well as the sperm count. Ginseng
can be consumed as 100mg to 300 mg twice daily as a male fertility
food. Avoid uncontrolled intake as side effects like nervousness,
changes in the heart rhythm must be watched for. Individuals suffering
from heart diseases, diabetes or other central nervous system illnesses
like insomnia must avoid taking this herb.
- Saw Palmetto: This herb is a natural steroid which
improves the tone and strengthens the male reproductive system. It is
widely used in the treatment of impotence and improving the male
libido.
- Flaxseed oil: Also helps in improving male fertility
by reducing impotence and and keeping the sperms healthy. One
tablespoon of flaxseed oil can be taken daily early morning.
- Fo-Ti : It increases the blood supply to the
reproductive organs and the pelvis. It also increases the sperm count
along with cleansing the body of toxic chemicals. Thus it improves the
energy and restores impaired sexual function especially in those
suffering from erectile
dysfunction. If taken in large doses it may cause gastrointestinal
disturbance and ‘pins and needles’ sensations in the extremities.
- Maca: It is used to treat impotence and increases
testosterone levels. It is also known to improve semen volume and sperm
mobility. It is a relatively safe drug with very few side effects.
- Yohimbe: It increases the blood flow to the penis by
dilating the blood vessels and thus treats impotence. Yohimbe also
increases the sensitivity of the nerves in the pelvic region. This herb
must be taken only within recommended doses and must not be consumed by
individuals suffering from peptic ulcers or kidney diseases.
- Cayenne: Cayenne is also a vasodilator which improves
the blood circulation in the penis treating erectile dysfunctions. It
must not be used by people suffering from renal problems, diabetes or
liver problems.
- Pumpkin seeds: They increase the muscular
contractility and strengthen the functions of the prostate glands. Due
to its effect on muscles there may be breathing difficulties or chest
pain after consumption and these effects must be watched for.
- Cranberry: It is a herb used to improve the functions
of the kidney. It does not allow losses of zinc through urine
and thus maintains its levels in the semen. Cranberry should be used
cautiously in diabetics and also those with liver disease.
- Horny goat weed: This herb increases the production
of sperms and enhances the sexual desire.
- Damiana: This herb is used for treating impotence and
overall glandular health of the male reproductive organs is also
enhanced by Damiana.
