Supplements to enhance male fertility
The need to enhance fertility and sexual function in males has been in focus since thousands of years. As research on this topic continues, a gamut of male fertility supplements have become available in the market. These include a variety of trace metals, vitamins and other antioxidant chemical substances. Some of the male fertility supplements commonly used are as follows:
-
Zinc: Zinc is an important trace metal present normally in the human body. It is a co-factor in more than 20 metalloenzymes involved in important chemical reactions within the body. Zinc is involved in the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone which is the more active form of the hormone. Research has shown that zinc deficiency can be one of the factors causing male infertility and hence zinc is often used as a male fertility supplement.
- Selenium: Selenium is another trace metal which acts as a co-factor in important enzymatic reactions. Selenium is usually available as a supplement with other trace elements and male fertility vitamins.
- Vitamin C: Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin that has been used as a male fertility vitamin. It acts as an antioxidant and scavenges free radicals produced by biochemical reactions in the body thereby protecting the spermatozoa from damage. Vitamin C can be taken in the dose of 100mg per day to enhance fertility.
- Vitamin E : Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin. It has antioxidant properties like Vitamin C . It must be remembered that Vitamin E supplementation must not be taken indefinitely as it can cause liver toxicity thereby further aggravating infertility.
- Vitamin B12 : Vitamin B12 is a water soluble vitamin which is normally produced in the human intestines by the bacteria present there. Vitamin B12 is an important vitamin for the formation and maturation of the DNA. Thus deficiency of Vitamin B12 can cause genetic damage in sperms leading to infertility.
- Folic acid: Folic acid is yet another cofactor in the different biochemical reactions occurring in the human body. It is also important in the process of DNA synthesis which stores genetic information within the cells. Folic acid is available as a supplement either singly or as a combination with the other male fertility vitamins.
- CoQ : CoQ is a extremely important chemical factor that is involved in the transfer of the oxygen radical within every cell in the human body. CoQ is a potent antioxidant agent through which free oxygen radicals can be converted to nontoxic radicals within the sperms thus preventing damage to the sperms.
- Herbal remedies: Herbal remedies have been used as male fertility supplements for thousands of years. Herbs like Maca, Saw palmetto, Ginseng, asparagus have been traditionally used by many ancient cultures to cure erectile dysfunction and to enhance male fertility. Herbs also increase the semen volume and the sperm motility. Nonetheless, herbs are to be taken in very small quantities as they may be associated with adverse effects like gastrointestinal disturbances, insomnia and a sensation of ‘pins and needles’ in the extremities.
